Keeping Abreast

Saw “Where the Truth Lies” (starring Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth) last night. This is not a review site, so I will refrain from giving you my opinion, but the experience deserves to be documented.

When you see a film at the Grand Palais, you MUST wear black tie, or they do not allow you in - and then they insult you in French.  Assuming you are properly attired, you walk the red carpet and feel very small, what with all the people hanging out of buildings across the street and the photogs sneering at you because you're blocking their shot of Eva Longoria (why she's here, is beyond me).

See some photos from yesterday's Cannes red carpet @ Cannes Red Carpet.

Once inside, you see that all of the arrivals are being filmed for display on the HUGE screen inside the theater, so the patrons can watch the stars arrive.  Before the film starts (always late), the audience sits there in their evening wear - all of them making snide comments on the people walking in behind them.  It's surreal, and makes you wonder if you picked your nose on your walk up (at least it made me wonder that).

As we sat there, making fun of the fashionistas, Sophie Marceau, a young french actress (Anthony Zimmer, Alex & Emma, The World Is Not Enough) strolled up the red carpet, charming the paparazzi.  As she twirled to face another flock of cameras, her dress strap slipped off her shoulder, and there was her right breast - ten feet tall on the screen for everyone to see.  The crowd outside barely blinked and Melle Marceau kept strolling like nothing happened - ah the French.

However, when she arrived inside the massive Palais Theatre, she received a bigger ovation than the film's stars - and much more applause than the film itself elicited or deserved (there's a review for you).

Makes me curious for my second day...

Au revoir.

have him send an email to info@ifctv.com and we'll steer him in the right direction.

Our acquisitions and scheduling gurus look at everything and then decide what to put on the network.

Are his films shorts or features?

Posted by: evan | Jun 18, 2005 12:55:49 PM

hi evan,
his films are short. and he lives outside of the US. bahrain to be precise. has made one or two and is not sure about what next. i saw this channel and thought it might be a good idea to start with.

Posted by: farida | Jun 21, 2005 7:13:35 PM

tell him to sned the email to info, and refer to this post/comment and we'll give him the address to send in the shorts.

if we like them, we can license them from him and get them on the air.

Is it your problem or the local satellite companies problem that your movies for 2 days now have been playing like they were recorded on a 1920's film clip. Choppy and jerky and sometimes pixalating.

Joe - it's not us. Who's your provider?

Please, with respect to IFC, let us not hear again about "uncut." While making a tape recording of an old film, I was treated, at the end, to an overdub of end credits (and music of course) promoing some nonsense or other. Who knows? Who cares? The point is that cutting into a film, even end credits, is "cutting." As with pregnancy, there's no "somewhat," or "just a little," or (in this case) "it was only the end credits." If IFC is going to do it, then do it and shut the hell up. For uncut, actually, really, genuinely "uncut," see TMC, which doesn't bother either with the ubiquitous channel logo plastered to the bottom-right screen, whether we like it or not. (We're so stupid, we might forget what channel we're viewing--apparently.) IFC is just as ready to sell as any other corporate media outlet, the only difference being that the those outlets are less pretentious--in supposing that what they do is anything other than offering up programming between bread-buttering ads and promos.

I see myself as one of the middle age libertarians with a love for film as an art form and a media for progressive ideas and social justice. Well, last night I watched the Independent Spirit Awards 2006 and I have some serious concerns now about the concept of independent movies in this country. What the hell was that?! A pathetic exposition of cynical, bitter, or jelousy hunted mostly middle age people finding a juvenile thrill in the use of fuck, shit, vomit and LSD if warranted or not! When young people got awards or aknowledgement, the cameras showed sneering faces and professional envy! What the hell happened there people? Do you see yourself as an artistic elite that gives you license to act like degenerated idiots?! Is this the way to energize the people into uprooting an administration of coruption and manipulation?! Or you just gave up on the ordinary people and get your fix from seeing yourselves as an elite club for you see your pictures on the cover of a magazine or on TV? And, for God's sake, rehearse those little introductions for the awards for a few minutes before the show! It's the least that you can do to show some respect for your nominated fellows and it helps you not to look like an illiterate imbecil while on national television!
IFC, censorship is not what I have in mind.
But is this what independent spirit means these days?! Where did we go wrong, man?!

Love IFC, have for years...
In fact I have gone days and never changed the channel. Gradually noticed a change and finally decided I had to write...
commercials creeping in, corporate sponsors and yes the dreaded pop ups and voice overs during the ending credits of a movie(some people do read those you know...and if I wanted to know when to catch Greg the Bunny I would check my guide)
Please say it isnt so ....IFC selling out?

Until recently it was possible to print out a month's list of the movie schedule. It appears this facility has been removed, and we must now print day by day from each screen. Any possibilities of including this print option again?

Also, any chance of having available a list of the film descriptions that can be printed a month at a time, or at least a week at a time?

Thanks for your attention to this request.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SCHEDULE? WHAT THE HELL USE IS A WEB SITE THAT DOESN'T TELL YOU WHAT'S SHOWING ON THE DAMN STATION?

Posted by: Wayne Hepner | May 4, 2006 1:15:50 AM

why can't i download a full months schedule/ anymore

Posted by: ajk | May 8, 2006 3:04:33 PM

AJK - NEW, PRINTABLE MONTHLY SCHEDULES ARE ON THEIR WAY, I SWEAR! The site is undergoing numerous redesigns and the printable schedule went away for a while. But the overwhelming demand - from viewers - has made it our #1 priority to reinstate it - better than it was before.

Thanks

I'n not our target audience, but you are an oasis in a waste land. I have never watched Idol or Survivor (not bragging, not complaining either) so I am in the minority which is ok wiith me having your channet as an option is wonderful. I love the Rollins show it is so real, not the pundit talking heads, it's real. It's so nice to have someone say something. And it is nice to have a channel to give people that opportunity to say and hear something REAL. By the way Im 52, white, fat, female, not cool. again not your target audience but I'm sure their are many of us out their that enjoy having the opportunity to watch your shows. Wow it sounds like I'm trying to win a prize, HOW I LIKE IFC IN 50 WORDS OR LESS. What a dork I am.

For cryin' out loud people, boycott this
damn channel until they respect you enough to lose the logo and the pop-ups during the movies!!!!
